Sheaboter is een product dat van oudsher uitsluitend door vrouwen wordt gemaakt. Door de explosief groeiende wereldwijde vraag is niet alleen het productieproces veranderd, maar staat ook de sociale dynamiek binnen de werkruimtes onder druk.
Women’s Gold is een observerende documentaire die een intiem portret schetst van de vrouwen in Tampe-Kukuo, een gemeenschap aan de rand van Tamale, de hoofdstad van de Northern Region in Ghana. De film verkent hoe hun werk niet alleen een bron van inkomsten is, maar ook een veilige ruimte biedt voor waar vrouwen solidariteit, eigenwaarde en onafhankelijkheid ervaren.
Maar terwijl de productie en export toenemen, rijst de vraag: blijft deze ‘social safe space’ behouden, of wordt hij opgeofferd aan economische vooruitgang? En kan deze matriarchale ruimte blijven bestaan in de patriarchale samenleving van Ghana?
